I'd like to share with you this little beauty of a product: Studio High Definition Powder from E.L.F (Eyes Lips Face) Cosmetics. I discovered it a couple of years ago when working on a film in Sydney. The camera we were shooting on was very new and of the super intense HD variety - news which immediately put me on the case of ensuring that I had a good range of HD friendly makeup at my disposal. When looking for a good translucent powder the first product I came across was Makeup Forever's HD powder which had great reviews and comes at $48 a pot. Luckily I continued my research and stumbled across this little beauty which is pretty much exactly the same with one major difference - its only costs $12!! Plus there's the fact that all of E.L.F's cosmetic ingredients happen to be certified vegan friendly and cruelty free by both Leaping Bunny and P.E.T.A - something which unfortunately Makeup Forever currently fall short on on both accounts... This product is really wonderful - its very fine and smooth, completely translucent and is perfect for setting makeup for the all seeing eye of the HD camera. Simply buff a small amount into the skin with a kabuki brush and your makeup is set, shine free and ready to film! E.L.F cosmetics have a large line of very reasonably priced cosmetics (the rest of which I have yet to try) and are available via national websites in Australia, the USA and some of Europe including the UK, France & Germany. Visit their websites to check out their full range and get this amazingly valued addition to your kit. *Do note that E.L.F's some of E.L.F.s brushes contain horse hair - however I've been assured that the professional line is 100% synthetic.

Mexican art is AMAZING! Bold use of bright contrasting colours, striking patterns and an almost crude, cartoon-like quality work together to draw in and excite the eyes. After stocking up on some nice colourful palettes at the IMATS last weekend (massive thanks to the Face Paint Shop & Scotty's) I decided to put them to use on some Aztec inspired paintings. The first I did on my lovely friend Claire who runs Pixie Nomad's - using strong colours with emphasis on the golds and turquoises that featured so prominently in ancient Mexico. The second piece I did on myself for lack of a model - and is a recreation of an amazing turquoise Aztec mask that I came across in the British Museum a few years ago. It was a really fun painting to do and has inspired me to do a series following the same theme...watch this space!!
I absolutely love painting on people with no/very little hair on their heads- there's so much space to play with! This summer at Kendall Calling and Boomtown with Happy Slap Boutique I had a couple of chances to let loose and fully decorate a couple of craniums. James, my model for the the black white and red piece, told me to do whatever I wanted so I improvised and opted to stick to a simple, striking colour scheme and try to produce something fun, bold and freaky. The brain was painted on my friend Scott Salt by request but looked a bit stranded and lonely perched up there by itself so I decided to extend the design down onto the face. Scott is an amazing photographer and was taking photos of Boomtown festival, so with this in mind I left the right side of his face paint free so it wouldn't interfere with his work. For more photos take a visit to the Makeup Gallery...
The photos from last weeks geisha shoot with Satya James are here & I must say I'm really very pleased with them!! I wanted a bright bold made up that corresponded to the the geometric pattern on the dress - a beautiful piece by Satya which she made out of a very striking kimono. As for the hair - our gorgeous model Steph has beautiful long dreadlocks which were great to work with - you can get so much shape and volume out them & then there's the added bonus that they hold accessorizes very well. A wonderful shoot & a big thank you to everyone involved!
I just got a few photos from a shoot I did with Satya James a few months ago - you can see them all in my make up portfolio... The photos from last weeks geisha shoot should be up tomorrow if all goes to plan!
Have been having a play with emulating images from the Flickr group 'My Face is My Canvas'. Here are my entries from the last few weeks:
I started having a play with bright lashings of colour at a friends birthday party in Sydney a couple of months ago using a set colour palette on each to play with the contours and highlight of the face....with a wee bit of artistic licence of course....
2011 is upon us and its going to be a magnificent year full of magic and exploration and of course lots and lots of painting people :)
Things have been a little slow on the make-up front recently - have been trying to do the markets, however the vast quantity of rain that unleashes itself on my head whenever I step outside has proved to be a little counter productive when it comes to face paint...however its encouraging a very friendly relationship with the sewing machine which is spurring me on to the creation on a new 'Craft' gallery which should be making its debut in a couple of weeks. I will also be creating a new gallery dedicated to kids facepaint as I seem to be doing rather a lot of that recently! I've recently discovered a marvelous group on Flickr called 'My Face is my Canvas' which posts a different themed emulation challenge each week. This I think is a wonderful idea and it has gotten me rather excited! Here is my entry for this weeks theme: lines. |
